chatting

it's amazing to me how much we have neglected really talking to each other. even now, as i write this blog, it is one more example of communication via some means other than just sitting and talking with another person. perhaps, more than anything else, that's what i miss about high school and college - not the parties, the sports, the intellectual stimulation (though i miss all of those things), but just the simple human contact and communication outside of time.

in college, especially in boone where going outside during much of the winter is not an option you want to take advantage of unless you're going skiing or something, just sitting in someone's dorm room and talking is a beautiful and daily pasttime. i remember all-nighters that had nothing to do with studying or making out, and that's amazing to me.

in a world where i haven't had a plain old sit-down conversation with my best friend in over a year, i believe this week is the first time i have really just sat and talked to people for extended periods of time. mostly, this has been because i can't really do much else with all the testing going on - i have to be here, but i can't do anything, so i sit and talk to people. last night i talked to a long-lost friend for about an hour on the phone, and this morning i have just chatted with people since i got in around 8. and we haven't been complaining and fussing about things, we've just been sharing. how awesome.

in a world full of texting, emailing, BLOGGING, rushing, shopping, fussing, fighting, and being too busy to breathe, i challenge you to make time to sit and talk with someone (for at least an hour) with no food in front of you, not in a busy restaurant, not while you're thinking of being somewhere else or what you should be doing for work or anything else, and just being there. it's amazing how beautiful fellowship with another person can be when silly distractions are removed from the equation.
