this morning was my glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes. i wasn't too worried about it, but i didn't want to fail for some silly reason and have to take a longer, more obnoxious test, so i'm hoping the results will be good. the paper they gave me on it said to avoid sugar the 24 hours before the test, including fruit, fruit juice, sweetened drinks, etc. and that was totally lame. BUT i did it. then this morning, i was allowed to have an egg or two, a glass of milk and toast with margarine... i had no bread for toast, nor do i own margarine (and apparently i can't spell it on my own either - thank goodness for spellcheck), so i had the eggs and milk before hopping in the car with andrew.
then i was supposed to down a sugar drink (provided by the ob) with a measured amount of sugar, within 5 mins, exactly an hour before having my blood drawn, so as we drove in morning traffic, i watched the clock for 8:00am, and on the dot, i downed my orange glucose drink. people described it so horribly that i chugged it as fast as possible so as not to taste it. i was done by 8:01, and it wasn't that bad. i mean, it was gross and i certainly wouldn't choose to drink it, but i think some people are a bit dramatic about how terrible it is. we got in early, had my blood drawn at exactly 9:00, and headed to bojangles :-P
according to the paper (my only source of information from the ob regarding the test at all... they're not all that good at explaining things apparently), i will hear back about the test "at [my] regularly scheduled appointment if it is normal, or within 2-3 days if it is not" so i can do another test. thanks guys, we can find out a glucose level on a glucometer in 5 seconds and can run a complete blood panel on the blood machine in like 12 mins at work, glad the vet is ahead of the human doctor.
so i'll let you know when i hear any results (here's hoping for the next scheduled visit rather than in a few days), and i guess we'll wait on week 29 for a pic, since my devoted photographer is asleep again.
